The Mark 15 was an American 21-inch torpedo intended for surface ships, above all destroyers. In design it was related to the smaller submarine Mark 14 torpedo, from which it differed mainly in greater length and greater range. Propulsion was provided by a steam engine fed by burning fuel with compressed air, which left a visible trail of bubbles behind the torpedo. The weapon served the US Navy throughout the Second World War and was the basic torpedo armament of destroyers.
A torpedo is a long body of revolution on which every unevenness of the lengthwise joint shows. Count on several rounds of filling, sanding through more than one grit and polishing the surface; it helps to wrap the abrasive paper around the body and sand evenly around it, not in lengthwise strokes. Glue the propellers and rudders only after the body has been painted. The classic scheme is a dark steel or gray body with a contrasting warhead; check the exact finish and markings against period photographs. A stand with a label for the model helps a great deal, because a torpedo on its own otherwise has no sense of scale.
