About product

Workable 40 cm tracks for the Pz.III and Pz.IV, early type, 1:35, DEF Model

A set of individual track links 40 cm wide in the form for the early types of the German medium tanks Panzer III and Panzer IV. The designation workable track means that the links are joined so that they stay able to turn against one another, and the finished track can then be wrapped naturally around the running gear and laid with a faithful sag. That is a fundamental difference from the rubber tracks from the box, which tend to be too thick, paint badly and do not hold their shape. The set adds detail to one of the most visible parts of the model, because the track is visible along its whole length from both sides of a finished vehicle.

The real subject

The Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks shared the same running gear and used identical tracks, so one type of link appeared on both vehicles and on the vehicles derived from them. The early type of link has a simpler shape than the later form and corresponds to machines from the start of the war. The width of 40 cm applied to the standard versions; later, wider tracks for soft ground and winter conditions were fitted to some vehicles. Choosing the right type of link is one of the details by which a carefully built model of a particular version is recognized.

Building and painting tips

First wash the links in lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release residue. Separate them from the casting blocks with a fine-toothed saw or a new blade and sand the remains down, ideally wet and with protection for your breathing. Put them together in shorter runs rather than the whole track at once, because they are easier to handle. Apply the glue, preferably cyanoacrylate, sparingly and only where the joint is to be firm, otherwise you lose the workability. Paint the track on its own, that is before fitting it to the running gear, and only then seat it. On the Panzer III and IV the track runs over return rollers, so leave only a slight sag between them. Finally weather it with pigments and add a metallic sheen on the contact surfaces.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of German vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who are not satisfied with the rubber tracks from the box
  • Those who want a faithful track sag and the option of fitting it after painting
  • Patient modelers, because putting the individual links together takes time

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The links are joined so that they stay able to turn against one another. The finished track can then be wrapped naturally around the running gear and laid with a faithful sag.

Yes. The Panzer III and Panzer IV shared the same running gear and used an identical type of track, so the set is intended for both vehicles.

Before fitting it to the running gear. Painting a finished track already seated between the wheels is considerably harder and it is more difficult to reach between the links.

On the Panzer III and IV the upper run of the track passes over return rollers, so the sag is only slight, apparent between the individual rollers.
