This is not a model of a vehicle but an accessory: a set of workable tracks 40 cm wide in the Winterketten winter form for the German Panzer III in 1:35 scale. The track is made up of individual links that are put together into a working whole - replacing the one-piece track supplied in the box.
A one-piece track from the box is quick, but it holds the shape it was molded in and will not allow a faithful sag between the return rollers. A track assembled from individual links behaves like the real thing instead: it settles on the drive sprocket and the idler wheel, passes around them without visible edges and drops between the rollers exactly as it looks in period photographs. The detail of the guide teeth and of the inner face of the links also stays readable once painted, so it pays off on vehicles with exposed running gear.
Experience of the first war winter on the Eastern Front showed that the standard track of the Panzer III and IV sinks in deep snow and churned-up ground. The answer was the so-called Winterketten - tracks with widened extensions that enlarged the contact area and lowered the ground pressure. They were used from the winter of 1942 and 1943 and are a rewarding detail for a modeler: they state the season and the front on which the vehicle served at once.
Assemble the track according to the instructions directly on the finished running gear, so that it fits the spacings of the particular model. It proves best to work in shorter sections and to keep checking how the track sits on the return rollers. For painting, a dark brown will do as a base, over which comes a graphite or steel dry brush on the contact surfaces and a lighter dust pigment into the corners between the extensions.
