About product

Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F1 of late production 1:35 - a photo-etched set from Voyager Model

A basic set of photo-etched parts in brass sheet for a plastic model of the Pz.Kpfw.IV tank in the Ausf.F1 version of late production, 1:35 scale. The set is cut for the Tamiya 35374 kit; a variant for a model from a different manufacturer exists under the same name, so it pays to watch the designation. The model itself is not in the package — this is a detailing accessory.

The rear end and the late production series

Late examples of the Ausf.F1 differ from the early ones in a row of small details concentrated mainly at the rear: the arrangement of the exhaust system and its covers, the execution of the rear hull plate, and the brackets and mounts above the engine compartment. These are all thin sheet metal parts and clips, that is exactly what an injection mold can only manage as an approximate shape. On top of that, a modeler has the rear plate in view at every look at the display case from behind, and molded raised detail imitating a sheet metal cover looks clumsy there. A brass part gives the edges back their sharpness and separate covers a real gap.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

It begins with taking the part out of the fret, and that is precisely where most of the damage happens. Lay the fret on a hard smooth surface and cut the tab through at a right angle with a sharp scalpel or a chisel, not with scissors — scissors bend the sheet at the point of the cut and the edge can no longer be straightened. Level the remains of the tab with a fine file drawn in one direction, away from the part. Before you start bending, check which side the etched groove is on: the bend always goes toward it, and a bend the other way will tear the groove open. With parts that are to form a square section, try the assembly dry first to see whether it goes together, and only then add the glue.

Who the set is for

  • Owners of the corresponding kit who are building the late production version of the Ausf.F1.
  • Modelers focused on the rear end and the engine compartment.
  • Builders used to cutting and bending brass.

The set is an accessory, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A sharp scalpel or a chisel on a hard surface. Scissors deform the sheet at the point of the cut and you will no longer straighten the edge.

Always toward the etched groove. A bend the other way will tear the groove open and the part will crack.

It is made for the late production form. On another version some of the parts would match neither in shape nor in position.
