A photo-etched set of so-called grousers, that is grip cleats fitted to the track links of American tracked vehicles of the Second World War. The manufacturer lists the set for the family of light tanks of the M3 and M5 series and the related M9 vehicles. The parts are in a scale thickness, so on the track they look fine and faithful. It is not a kit of the vehicle, but a detail accessory for a model in 1:35 scale.
A smooth track works well on a hard surface, but in mud, snow and soft ground it loses its grip. The grousers were therefore fixed to some of the links and formed transverse projections that bit into the surface. They were not fitted all the way round — they increased drag, wear and the loads on the running gear, and so they were fitted only to every few links. The crews carried the unused pieces in bundles on the hull or on the fenders, which is a useful and period-documented detail for a modeler.
The parts are small; work with tweezers over a surface with a raised edge, so that losses are kept to a minimum. Glue them with gel cyanoacrylate, as the thin version runs into the track and floods the detail. Decide the spacing in advance and keep to it along the whole length. Degrease the metal and spray a base coat. In service the grousers are rubbed down to bare metal, so once the paint has dried scrape it off the edges carefully, or use a chipped-edge technique, and add dust and mud pigments matching the ground of the scene.
The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
