The real subject is the German Weser project, that is the intended conversion of an unfinished heavy cruiser of the Admiral Hipper class into an aircraft carrier. The work was never completed and the vessel never entered service, so the model captures the projected state as the manufacturer reconstructs it. In 1:350 scale this is a long and fairly demanding model, and in a display case it takes up room to match.
The basis was to be the hull structure of the heavy cruiser Seydlitz, whose construction had been halted and whose upper works were to give way to a full-length flight deck with an island superstructure on the starboard side. The conversion reckoned with a hangar, elevators and the equipment needed for operating carrier aircraft. The project remained unfinished and its final form differs from source to source, so approach the model as a reconstruction of a design rather than as a vessel that existed in completed form. That is exactly what makes the subject interesting for collectors looking for a model outside the usual run of kits.
Work in assemblies: the hull and the deck first, and only then the superstructure and the small fittings. Check the long hull on a flat surface before gluing, so that no sag appears anywhere. It is practical to paint the flight deck separately and to attach it last, because masking it is otherwise harder. On large areas an airbrush and a fine shading of the individual panels look good. The railings, ladders and other fine items call for tweezers and cyanoacrylate; anyone who wants to go further can reach for separately sold photo-etched accessories. Stand the finished model on a stand or in a display case where it will not be stressed by its own length.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
