The set is neither a kit nor a finished model; it is a veneer accessory for a plastic model of the battleship Scharnhorst in the state matching the year 1940, in 1:350 scale. The wooden veneer is cut to the shape of the deck, has printed plank laying and an adhesive layer on the back. It is glued over the engraved plastic deck and replaces it with a surface of real wood.

Working around superstructures, turrets and hatches

The most demanding part of the work is the cut-outs. A deck is not a smooth area; the bases of superstructures, barbettes, ventilator heads, winches and hatches pass through it, and the veneer is cut around them with small tolerances. Work in such a way that you first merely lay the part on dry and check every cut-out against the plastic one by one. Where the clearance is too large or where the veneer overhangs by a hair, note it and adjust before taking the film off. Smaller openings are usually better eased by careful widening than forcing the veneer in; veneer pushed into place ripples around it.

The order of the build

Glue the deck at the point when the plastic is finished and sprayed but the superstructures are not yet fixed down for good. You then have free access to the cut-outs and do not have to maneuver between finished parts. Fit the superstructures after the veneer, and sand their feet down slightly by the thickness of the veneer if needed, so that they seat without a gap.
