About product

HMS Belfast 1942 1:350 - Trumpeter

Injection-molded plastic full-hull model of the British light cruiser HMS Belfast as she was in 1942, in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. It is a sizeable model: the hull is split and comes with a finely engraved deck, photo-etched parts and a display stand with a name plate for showing the ship off. The box also contains the small shipborne aircraft. Thanks to the 1:350 scale, the finished piece is over half a meter long.

The real subject

HMS Belfast was a British light cruiser of the Town class, one of the largest and most powerful cruisers of the Royal Navy of her day. After mine damage at the start of the war she went through an extensive rebuild and returned to service at the end of 1942 with reinforced armament, radar and armor. She escorted the Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union and in December 1943 took part in the sinking of the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst in the Battle of the North Cape. In June 1944 she supported the landings in Normandy. She is preserved to this day as a museum ship on the Thames in London.

Building and painting tips

First glue and clean up the hull carefully so that the side joint does not show; the full-hull model can be set on the supplied stand, or you can prepare a display base of your own. Glue the fine photo-etched railings, ladders and radar screens with cyanoacrylate and bend them over an edge. Paint the superstructures and the gun barrels separately before the final assembly. An airbrush and the shades of British naval camouflage are ideal; washes flowing into the recesses and light drybrushing will bring out the decks, the rivets and the details. The wooden deck areas stand out after light toning.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in the Royal Navy and the naval war of World War II
  • modelers who want a large, impressive ship model in 1:350
  • fans of working with photo-etched parts and ship railings
  • builders experienced with an airbrush and weathering techniques

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
