About product

HMS Eskimo 1:350, 1941 configuration (Trumpeter)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the British destroyer HMS Eskimo of the Tribal class as she was in 1941, from Trumpeter in 1:350 scale. The kit has finely shaped plastic with a molded wooden deck, clear parts and a photo-etched fret for the railings and fine details. A stand is included. It is a rewarding, compact model representing one of the best-known classes of British destroyers of the Second World War.

The real subject

HMS Eskimo belonged to the Tribal class destroyers, which were marked out by heavy gun armament and an impressive silhouette. Eskimo became famous above all in the Second Battle of Narvik in 1940, where she suffered severe damage to her bow, yet survived and went on serving, among other things in support of Allied operations. The Tribal class was valued for its versatility and combat worth, though it paid for this with a smaller number of torpedoes than other destroyers.

Building and painting tips

The small hull and the fine superstructures call for careful gluing with thin cement for plastic. Fold the photo-etched railings precisely and attach them with cyanoacrylate glue. Mask the clear parts before spraying. Paint with an airbrush in a period British naval camouflage; tone down the molded wooden deck and pick out the planks lightly. Restrained weathering and panel highlighting will give a small model a sense of scale and depth. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and seal them with a matte one. Aftermarket photo-etch and a wooden deck will refine the model further.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of the Royal Navy and of destroyers
  • For collectors of ships in a single 1:350 scale
  • For modelers who appreciate photo-etch right in the box
  • A compact model that suits a smaller display case too

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The kit contains a photo-etched fret for the railings and fine details, which raises the level considerably on a small destroyer. A wooden deck and further photo-etch can be bought separately.

These were British destroyers with heavy gun armament and an impressive silhouette. HMS Eskimo became famous above all in the Second Battle of Narvik in 1940.

The kit contains a complete hull and a stand for building the full model. A waterline version would mean modifying the hull beyond what the kit provides.
