A wooden deck overlay for a model in 1:350 scale, cut for the Bronco NB5017 kit. It replaces the painted plastic deck with real wood, so the grain of the fibers and the division into individual planks show on the model. The surface also changes its shade according to the viewing angle, which is difficult to imitate with paint.

The real subject

Chen Yuen was one of the ironclads of the Chinese Peiyang Fleet, the main naval force of China at the end of the nineteenth century. Ships of this type were built in German shipyards and were heavily armored and armed for their day. The Peiyang Fleet clashed with the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1894 and 1895. Extensive wooden decks were among the typical features of ships of that time, which is why they come into their own on a model.

How to work with the deck

• before gluing, lay the deck on dry and check whether the cutouts and openings fit
• check the method of attachment in the instructions, as some decks have an adhesive back
• clear the area on the model of dust and grease in advance, otherwise the joint will not hold
• the finished surface can be unified with a suitable varnish; make a test on an offcut
• fit the deck before the fragile superstructure and railings go onto the model
