About product

MikroMir 1:350 Iskra — Soviet Pravda-class submarine, late version

A kit of the Soviet submarine Iskra in 1:350 scale from MikroMir, in a form matching the later state of the boat. Iskra was one of the three large submarines of the Pravda class, whose names relate in Russian to the notions of truth, star and spark. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the materials used in the set are stated on the box.

The real subject

The Pravda-class submarines were built in the Soviet Union in the first half of the 1930s as so-called squadron submarines. They were meant to be fast enough on the surface to escort formations of surface ships and to operate together with them. A long slender hull with a high bow, a large displacement and heavy gun armament on deck followed from that. Practice did not bear the concept out, however: the boats dived slowly, were unwieldy underwater and their combat value remained limited, so they served mainly for training, transport and auxiliary duties. Iskra was the last unit of this short series and the late version matches the state after the modifications carried out during service.

Building and painting tips

On a submarine in 1:350 scale a clean surface decides everything. Make the joint of the two hull halves carefully, fill it and sand it smooth, because every unevenness shows on the uninterrupted plating. Decide in advance whether you will build the model full-hull on a stand or only down to the waterline. Glue the small parts, that is the gun armament, the periscopes and the railings, only after the hull has been sprayed, otherwise you will break them while sanding or masking. The painting tends to be restrained: a darker gray shade on the hull, a slightly different underside and discreet weathering. Overdone rust looks unconvincing on a submarine, and fine grading of the shade with a light wash in the grooves is better.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of submarines in a single 1:350 scale
  • anyone interested in less common prewar Soviet designs
  • modelers who want a model for a surface water scene
  • builders used to short-run kits and careful surface preparation

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The form matches the state of the boat after the modifications carried out during service, not the original state at completion.

Which hull solution the kit allows is stated in the instructions in the package. Plan the build according to them before you glue the hull together.

They were conceived as fast squadron submarines for working with surface formations. For speed on the surface they paid with slow diving and poorer handling underwater.
