About product

Tamiya 1:350 Mogami - a kit of the Japanese cruiser

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese cruiser Mogami in 1:350 scale from the manufacturer Tamiya. The model captures the ship in her later form as an aviation cruiser, when the stern had been rebuilt into a deck for seaplanes. The package combines plastic parts with further details; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Take care to tell this apart from other versions and scales of the Mogami - this model is in 1:350 scale.

The real subject

Mogami was the lead ship of the class of the same name in the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was originally built under the restriction imposed by the London Naval Treaty and carried 15.5 cm guns in triple turrets, which were later replaced by 20.3 cm guns, and that turned the ship into a heavy cruiser. During the Second World War Mogami took part in a number of operations in the Pacific. After heavy damage in the Battle of Midway she was rebuilt: the after part was given a deck allowing her to carry a larger number of reconnaissance seaplanes, making her what is known as an aviation cruiser.

Building and painting tips

The hull can be built as a full hull or, once the underwater part has been cut off, displayed as a waterline model. Use liquid cement for plastic on the plastic joints. Fine features such as the cranes, the seaplane propellers or the railings are usually provided as photo-etched parts, which should be bonded with super glue. Apply the steel gray of the hull and superstructures with an airbrush over a primer and shade the deck separately. The ship shows to advantage on a stand or in a simple water surface with weathering.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of warships and of the Imperial Japanese Navy
  • Modelers interested in 1:350 scale
  • Lovers of unusual types such as the aviation cruiser
  • Builders who will appreciate photo-etched details and weathering work

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
