About product

Royal Navy watertight doors 1:350, a SPACE set from Eduard

This is not a model of a ship but an accessory set. The SPACE line from the Czech manufacturer Eduard joins 3D printing with color printing on a decal carrier: the result is an element that, unlike a classic decal, has relief of its own, and is still transferred onto the model much like a decal. This set is aimed at the watertight doors carried by Royal Navy vessels in the period of the Second World War and it is prepared for 1:350 scale.

What the set is good for

Doors, hatches and covers are among the details by which the eye judges the scale and the degree of work on a model at once. Injection-molded superstructures in 1:350 tend to have these elements only suggested by shallow engraving, or not at all. Color 3D detail gives the sides of the superstructures depth and breaks up a uniform gray area without your having to cut, drill or glue anything out of photo-etched parts.

Application tips

Follow the instructions that come in the package. In general the area under the detail should be smooth and coated with a gloss varnish, because on a matte surface the carrier adheres less well and silvering may appear. Moisten only the backing paper, work with soft-jawed tweezers and fix the detail with PVA glue (white glue), without pressing on it, so that the relief layer is not damaged. Do not use decal softeners at all: the 3D layer reacts to them differently from the thin film of an ordinary decal and their chemistry would damage it. Seal the finished place with a matte or satin varnish according to the surrounding surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:350 scale who want to lift the level of detail quickly.
  • Modelers who prefer finished color detail to gluing tiny photo-etched parts.
  • Anyone interested in Royal Navy vessels of the Second World War period.
  • Anyone who builds several ship models and is looking for a generally usable accessory.

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is an accessory set of details meant for a ship model in 1:350 scale, which is bought separately.

Go by the instructions in the package. In general: a smooth and glossy undercoat, a moistened backing paper, soft-jawed tweezers and fixing with PVA glue (white glue); do not use a decal softener, as it would damage the 3D layer.

Watertight doors are a universal element, so the set is not tied to a single model. Before buying, though, check that your vessel matches British practice of the period and that you have places free for the details.

Check the exact number and the layout of the details on the sheet on the box of the set.
