They deal with the transition between shades on the deck. You spray the base tone, lay the masks on once it has cured and spray over with the second one; the boundary then arises exactly along the cut-out rather than along the steadiness of your hand. On a model of 1:350 size it is the quickest route to a result that stands a close look.
Timing decides the quality of the edge. The best moment is shortly after spraying, when the paint has set but not yet fully cured, as the edge then breaks cleanly. From a completely cured coat a mask comes away less well and may pull the edge of the paintwork with it. Never pull the film straight upward: draw it back over itself, at a sharp angle close above the surface and slowly. If a slightly frayed edge does appear, level it by scratching with the tip of a scalpel run along the edge rather than by painting over it. And work at normal room temperature; in a cold room the paint is more brittle and the edge breaks.
This is not a ship kit. The package holds masking material only; the model and paints are bought separately.
