A plastic kit of the American light cruiser USS San Diego (CL-53) of the Atlanta class in 1:350 scale from the Aotori Bunka brand. The package combines injection-molded plastic with photo-etch and a metal chain for the anchor cable.
USS San Diego belonged to the Atlanta class, light cruisers optimized for anti-aircraft defense. Instead of heavy guns they carried a numerous battery of dual-purpose 127 mm guns in twin turrets, ideal for protecting carrier formations against air attack. The Atlanta class grew out of the concept of a fast anti-aircraft cruiser that could swamp approaching aircraft with fire. The San Diego went through the whole Pacific campaign and became one of the most decorated ships of the US Navy in the Second World War; she was among the first large US Navy ships present in Tokyo Bay after the Japanese surrender.
The model has a great many fine barrels and complex superstructures, so we recommend an airbrush for an even camouflage scheme and a wash to bring out the deck and the details. Bond the photo-etched parts (railings, radars) with super glue. Start the build with the hull and the main deck, then fit the turrets and the fine superstructures; the hull can be displayed on a stand as a whole.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
