It is not a ship in the usual sense: it is a floating repair facility that can be built as a subject in its own right or used as a striking base for your model of a warship in the same scale. Given the dimensions of the real subject, this is an above-average assembly, and it is a good idea to count on that already when planning the space in the display case. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The abbreviation ABSD denotes a type of sectional dock for advanced bases. It was the answer to a problem that proved fundamental in the vast expanse of the Pacific in the Second World War: damaged large ships could not be sent thousands of miles back to home shipyards for repair. The dock was therefore built from several separate floating sections that could be towed to the spot and joined there into a single whole. Once the ballast tanks were flooded the dock submerged, the ship floated in, and after the water was pumped out the whole structure rose with her. The capacity of such a facility was enough even for the largest surface units of the day. The side towers with cranes, the columns and the walkways give the dock a distinctly industrial silhouette, entirely unlike smooth ship architecture.
Build a large and intricate object in subassemblies and keep checking the right angles and the flatness of the floor as you go, because on long parts a deviation adds up easily. Paint the inside of the dock before you close the side walls up, as afterward you will reach in only with difficulty. An airbrush and an even base coat are ideal, and the wear then goes on top of them: rust and streaking are entirely in place on a facility working permanently in salt water. The submerged parts below the waterline deserve a darker tone and a hint of marine growth. The finished dock works superbly as a scene: with a ship model inside, with figures and cranes, you get a display that draws every eye in the case.
