An add-on detail set in 1:350 scale from Pontos Model for the guided-missile frigate of the Oliver Hazard Perry class in the version with the lengthened hull. Modern surface ships have a great many fine structures, especially walkways, railings, antennas and flight deck equipment, which injection-molded plastic cannot render in a scale thickness. The set serves to replace and add them. It is not a model on its own and without a base plastic kit it cannot be used.
The frigates of the Oliver Hazard Perry class came about in the 1970s as a numerous and relatively inexpensive class of escort ships of the US Navy, intended mainly to protect convoys and task forces against submarines and aircraft. They carried a single-arm launcher for guided missiles, a 76 mm gun and a close-in defense system. The later units had a lengthened hull with a larger flight deck and hangar, so that they could carry a pair of helicopters of the LAMPS III system. Ships of this class also served in the navies of a number of other countries.
Detail sets of this kind replace coarsely shaped plastic features with finer parts, so you work with small components and it is good to proceed in sections. Separate the photo-etched parts on a hard support with a sharp knife or special nippers, fold them in a bending tool or between two razor blades and glue them with a super glue with an extended setting time, or spot-glue them with a gel-consistency glue. Degrease the metal before painting and give it a primer coat, otherwise the paint flakes off. Fit the set as the model goes along, not onto a finished hull: a number of parts are accessible only before the deck and the superstructures are closed up.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
