The Hinges for hoods and doors set brings hinges for the opening panels of a body in a second shape. They come into play where a hood or a door does not stay permanently closed and the hinge is therefore on show. The set does not replace the kit of the car or its body, as it is an accessory fitted during the build.
Once a model stands in a display case with the hood raised, attention moves from the paint to what is underneath. A production molding of a hinge tends to be thick and coarse, because it has to survive repeated handling, whereas a real hinge is slender and runs exactly along its chosen axis. In 1:12 scale that difference is most apparent, because the model is examined close up and an open hood tends to be its main display.
The procedure that has proved itself is simple. First lay both halves of the hinge on the edges dry and swing the opening panel a few times. Only once the hood closes without strain should you make the permanent joint. The alignment of the two hinges matters more than their exact position, because if they diverge the panel warps and the gap around its edge widens on one side. Apply paint in thin coats, as even a slight excess can obstruct a joint this small and stiffen its movement.
