A set of detail parts in 1:12 scale that reproduces the long tension springs used on racing exhaust systems. It is intended for builds of motorcycles and racing cars in the large scale. It is an accessory, and there is no model and no complete exhaust system in the package.
On competition machines the springs hold the exhaust weldments and the end mufflers together instead of a solid flange with bolts. The joint then stays separable within minutes and, above all, flexible: an exhaust expands markedly with heat in use and a spring evens these differences out without the pipe cracking. On motorcycles and single-seaters they are therefore visible at every division of the system. The manufacturer also lists a shorter version, and in other scales sets with long and short springs together, so Type 1 and the length designation are worth checking against the real subject.
Springs are among the parts fitted at the very end, after the exhaust and the body have been painted. Dry painting with a brush or with a dry pigment holds on the fine pattern of the winding better than a heavy coat from an airbrush. Then add a darker weathering in the hollows to the steel shade, and a brownish tint near the end of the pipe; on real machines the springs always discolor with heat. Dose the cyanoacrylate glue with a pin.
