Photo-etched ship railings in 1:400 scale for models of Imperial Japanese Navy vessels are a metal accessory that takes the place of the coarse plastic railings of a kit.

An aftermarket accessory, not a model. Photo-etched strips of railings in a form which, according to the name, matches Imperial Japanese Navy vessels. The set is universal: the strips are cut to length for the deck of the particular model.
With railings the rule is that they are painted beforehand. Once a strip is glued to the model, getting a brush between the stanchions without smearing paint over the deck is practically impossible. The proven procedure: leave the etching on the fret, degrease it, spray it with a primer meant for metal and immediately afterwards with the target shade. Spray thinly and from two opposite directions so that both sides of the stanchions are covered; one heavy coat blocks the gaps between the wires and the railings thicken. Only once it is dry, cut the strips off, file the tabs down and touch up the bare metal at the cut with a brush.
Remove the plastic railings from the kit and level the area. Measure the length with a strip of paper along the edge of the deck, not with a ruler along a straight line; the edge of a deck is usually curved. Glue with a minute drop of super glue at the foot of the stanchions, applied with a wooden stick. On curves, bend the strip gradually in short sections. Leave the fitting to the end of the build, after the hull has been varnished and weathered.
This is an accessory for a ship kit, not a kit on its own. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
