The VAZ-2121 Lada Niva is a Soviet off-road vehicle that differed from the rivals of its day in having a unitary body and all-wheel drive derived from a passenger car. Thanks to its short wheelbase, a large approach angle and simple engineering it became a vehicle that spread far beyond the borders of the Soviet Union of the time and in many countries still serves today in farming and in mountain areas.
This is a plastic kit in 1:43 scale, the most common collector scale for car models. A finished vehicle in it takes up only a few centimeters in a cabinet, so it suits building a coherent collection of vehicles of Eastern production. The build is quick compared with large scales, but it makes greater demands on clean gluing and on patience when fitting the small parts.
Separate the parts with cutters or a sharp knife a little clear of the part and sand away the rest, so that the mating surfaces stay flat. The body is worth painting in thin coats, otherwise the fine pressed edges and the outlines of the windows are lost. Fit the glazing and the chrome elements only once the paint is dry and glue them carefully, so that the adhesive does not fog them.
The set will please collectors of vehicles of Eastern production and modelers who want a smaller build for one or two evenings. An off-road vehicle will also take a dusty and muddy finish, which gives a small model its scale.
