A base with the motif of the Davis-Monthan base near Tucson in 1:72 scale sets a model into the setting of an Arizona desert air base.
Responsibility details are not available.
The motif comes from the areas of the Davis-Monthan air base in Tucson, Arizona. The item serves to present a finished model; it holds no kit itself. Instead of laborious scene building, you simply stand the model on an area that matches a real airfield.
The base carries the names of two local airmen of the early twentieth century and lies in the desert not far from the Mexican border. Dry air and hard ground made it an ideal place for storing aircraft, and so the largest store of withdrawn aircraft in the world grew up here, nicknamed the boneyard. The rows of machines parked in regular formations are known from aerial photographs all over the world. The base is not just a storage area, though: combat wings and training units are based here and the activity is still very much alive.
A desert setting invites you to add a fine deposit of dust to the landing gear and the lower surfaces of a model; dry pigment applied with a brush is enough. Shadow also stands out on a smooth area, so when photographing, aim the light from one direction and only lightly fill the other side with a reflector. Do not slide the model across the surface but lift it, so that the area is not scratched.
