This set from Metallic Details holds, according to its name, four antennas for satellite communication in the UHF band in 1:48 scale. The antenna got its Egg-Beater nickname from its helical construction, which really does bring to mind the beaters of a kitchen egg-beater. It is not an aircraft model but a small accessory for fitting out a finished model.
Helical antennas for satellite communication appear on the spines of military aircraft and helicopters from the moment satellite communication became an ordinary part of their equipment. They are small but distinctive in shape, so on a model in 1:48 scale they show clearly, and in kits they are either missing altogether or merely suggested by a coarse plastic bump. A package of four means it will do for several models, or for a machine that carries more than one antenna at a time.
A resin casting manages a thin helix far better than an injection mold, because it needs neither draft angles nor a parting line across the whole part. Which particular machines carried the antenna, and in what position, should be checked against a photograph of your own subject — the placement differs from aircraft to aircraft and is not stated here.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water. Mold release residue clings to the surface and paint will not hold over it. Do not snap the casting blocks off but cut them with a saw or a cutting disc and level the surface with a file and fine abrasive paper. Sand resin wet and protect your airways; the dust from it is unpleasant. It is glued with super glue, as ordinary plastic cement has no effect on resin. Before painting, spray the parts with primer, which unifies the resin with the plastic of the kit and brings out any imperfections to be sanded away.
The set is an accessory for building a model, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
