An injection-molded plastic kit from Hobby Boss represents the American attack aircraft A-10A Thunderbolt II, that is the single-seat basic production version. The 1:48 scale is a proven compromise between the size of the model and the amount of detail for attack aircraft. The model is assembled and painted; the package holds a plastic kit.
The A-10 was created at Fairchild Republic as a specialized machine for close support of ground troops. The whole aircraft is built around a seven-barrel 30 mm rotary cannon which runs through the nose and whose fire can hit armored vehicles. Two General Electric TF34 turbofan engines are placed high on the rear between the tail surfaces, where the wing and the fuselage shield them and where they radiate less heat. The pilot sits in an armored tub, the controls are duplicated and the aircraft is built so that it comes back to base with damage. It was precisely its low speed, endurance over the battlefield and toughness that kept the type in service far longer than originally expected.
Finish the cockpit with its armored tub and the landing gear bays before closing the fuselage. Seat the engine nacelles symmetrically with respect to the tail surfaces; asymmetry shows on the model at once. The gray schemes of attack aircraft come out well when the surfaces are shaded after spraying and the engraved lines are brought out with a thinned wash. In service the muzzle and the underside of the fuselage quickly became dirty from exhaust gases, so a light smoke patina running from the nose backward looks convincing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
