Photo-etch is a thin metal sheet with an etched relief, from which the individual parts are separated, bent to shape and glued to the model. Metal holds its shape even at a thickness injection-molded plastic cannot manage, which is why photo-etch comes into its own wherever the material is to be genuinely thin to scale: on grilles, covers, instrument panels, belts, grab handles and small fittings. The extent of the sheet and the order of assembly are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The Douglas A-1H Skyraider was an American single-seat attack aircraft with a piston engine, intended for service from the decks of aircraft carriers. It entered service only after the Second World War and yet saw action in Korea and in Vietnam, where it excelled at what the jets of the day could not do: it could stay over the battlefield for long hours and carry an extensive load of external stores while doing so. It is therefore a propeller-driven aircraft, not a helicopter.
Separate the parts with a sharp blade on a hard surface rather than by breaking them out in your fingers, or the thin metal will twist and straighten badly. Make the bends over the edge of a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp along its whole length. They are glued with cyanoacrylate applied on the tip of a toothpick; polystyrene cement will not join metal. Wash and degrease the metal before painting and lay a primer under the paint, otherwise the finish will flake off the smooth surface.
A photo-etched sheet is supplied. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
