The A5M was a carrier fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy and its first monoplane committed to combat in this role. The aircraft had an all-metal structure, fixed landing gear with wheel covers and a radial engine in a short fuselage. The Allies used the designation Claude for it. The A5M2b version belongs to the later stages of the development of the type, which served over China and at the beginning of the war in the Pacific, where more modern machines gradually replaced it.
