This set deals with the two-color national insignia: a red disc encircled by a light ring. It was exactly this kind of border that spread on Japanese machines during the war, so that the insignia would read better on dark camouflage.
The A6M1 was the prototype beginning of the whole series, the production A6M2 became the best-known version of the first period of the war and the A6M3 brought, among other things, a clipped wing without folding tips on the Model 32. What stayed common to them was the essential: an exceptionally light structure, an enormous range and an agility that in the first months of fighting did not allow the Allies a classic turning fight. For that lightness, however, the machine paid with poor resistance to hits.
An insignia with a border is sprayed in two goes and the order decides. First apply the white to the whole area of the disc and the ring and let it dry out properly: white dries more slowly than it seems, and an undercured coat will peel off during the second masking. Only then cover the ring and add the red center. The width of the border is very small in 1:48 scale, so lay the masks with a magnifier and lower the pressure while spraying, so that the red mist does not spill over the edge of the ring.
