1:48 A6M1/2/2-K u/c bays is a set of landing gear bay masks for models of the early A6M versions, including the trainer variant, in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set masks the landing gear bays, that is the inner space in the wing into which the main landing gear retracts. According to the name it covers the early A6M1 and A6M2 versions and the two-seat A6M2-K trainer variant.
On Japanese naval aircraft the inside of a bay was painted in a different shade from the lower surfaces of the airframe, so on a model it is sprayed separately and in a different order. An open bay is meanwhile permanently in view, because the model stands on its landing gear and the underside of the wing is clearly visible when you look into a display case. When the boundary between the two shades is blurred, or the top coat gets into the bay, it shows at first glance. A die-cut mask prevents that and keeps the outline crisp.
Spray the bay, let it cure and only then insert the mask. Press it down all the way around; in deep parts a blunt stick helps. Spray the lower surfaces thinly and rather at an angle, not perpendicularly into the opening, so that the paint cannot get under the edge. The masking can easily stay in place through the matte varnish and the weathering, and the bay can be uncovered only at the end. The A6M2-K trainer version had two seats and was used for training pilots, but the structure of the wing and the bays stayed the same as on the early single-seat form.
