Dead Design 1:48 AH-1G Cobra Nat. Insignias are masks for the national insignia. Instead of a decal, the insignia is sprayed straight onto the surface of the model.

A set of masking templates for spraying the national insignia onto a model of the attack helicopter Bell AH-1G Cobra in 1:48 scale. Careful, these are not glazing masks for the cabin nor decals - it is a different kind of product with a different purpose.
A decal is always a thin layer of finish with a carrier film that stays on the model. On a flat or even slightly rough surface that film gives itself away by a glossy outline around the insignia, by so-called silvering. A sprayed insignia has no film: it is paint on paint, so it lies in the plane of the surface, and after a clear coat is sprayed over it even the last hint of a transition disappears. On top of that it holds where a decal has trouble - across riveting, across sharp edges of panels and across surfaces that meet at an angle.
The surface has to be smooth and dry. Transfer the template to the place, press it down and first spray a light base, so that the resulting color covers even on a dark airframe. Once it has gone tacky the actual shade of the insignia follows, again in thin coats. Take the template off while the paint is fresh, and then even the whole model out with a final clear coat. Most insignia masks are multi-part and the individual parts are applied one after another, so think the order of colors out in advance.
