An injection-molded plastic kit of the single-engined AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter in the Q and S versions, that is in the upgraded standards armed with guided missiles. The boxing from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby is focused on aircraft operated by the Israeli Air Force. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Cobra arose as a slim-bodied attack derivative of the UH-1 helicopter: it took over its powerplant and rotor system but received a new fuselage only about a meter wide, with the crew seated in tandem, the gunner in front and the pilot higher up behind him. The narrow cross section reduced the frontal silhouette and freed up room for stub wings with stores. The AH-1Q version was modified for the use of anti-tank guided missiles with the corresponding sighting equipment, and the AH-1S that followed brought a more powerful powerplant and further changes to the avionics and the cockpit. Machines of this generation served with a number of operators for decades, because they combined a small target, respectable endurance and simple maintenance.
Kits from this manufacturer reward patience: dry-fit the parts, sand the mating surfaces lightly where needed and glue with a liquid cement for polystyrene run into the joint by capillary action. Finish the cockpit, the seats and the instrument panels and close them up before you join the fuselage halves, because once they are joined you cannot reach into the narrow cross section. Leave the rotor blades and the landing gear to the end so that they do not get in the way during handling. Prime the whole model before painting: smooth glossy plastic holds paint badly, while primer anchors it and at the same time evens the surface out where you have sanded and filled. Choose a light primer under the lighter gray and sand tones, or the coats will look dirty; save a dark primer for where you want quick panel shading.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
