A plastic kit of the Japanese carrier-based attack bomber Aichi B7A2 Ryusei Kai in 1:48 scale from Hasegawa of Japan, manufacturer's part number JT49. The package contains plastic frames and a decal sheet with markings of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service; parts for open bomb bay doors are enclosed. The subject was among the largest carrier machines of its day and the model matches that in span and in height on its landing gear.
The Ryusei, given the Allied code Grace, was to replace the torpedo bombers and dive bombers of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service with a single type. The designers chose a mid-wing layout with an inverted gull wing, because the internal bomb bay called for a high-set wing and a straight wing would have required an awkwardly long landing gear. The eighteen-cylinder Nakajima Homare radial engine drove it. Before production got going, the Japanese aircraft carriers were already out of the picture after their losses, so the machines served from land bases and only a small number were built.
Paint and glue the bomb bay before joining the fuselage; its doors hold their own shape, so do not glue them under pressure. The cockpit is long and well visible, so it pays to do the belts and the instrument panel properly. Spray the upper dark green over a light base and take the boundary against the light underside freehand, not along a mask. The decals will settle on a gloss surface; leave the matte clear coat to the very end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
