About product

Airco DH.2 (1:48, Eduard)

This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the British Airco DH.2 fighter biplane of the First World War in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. Depending on the edition, the plastic tends to be accompanied by photo-etched parts and a painting mask; the box offers several color schemes of Royal Flying Corps aircraft. Because of its strut-braced structure and its pusher engine layout the model is more demanding to build, so count on careful rigging between the wings and the tail booms. Check the exact equipment and the number of markings on the box itself.

The real subject

The Airco DH.2 was a single-seat fighter biplane with a pusher propeller: the rotary engine and the propeller sat behind the pilot, which made it possible to fire a forward machine gun without synchronizing it with the propeller. That is exactly what made it an effective weapon in 1916, one that helped the Royal Flying Corps squadrons end the period of German Fokker superiority. The tail surfaces were carried on lattice booms, with bracing wires running between them.

Building and painting tips

Finish the cockpit before joining the fuselage shells. Glue the struts and booms accurately so that the biplane does not lose its geometry; use a jig for right angles. Make the rigging from stretched sprue or a special thread only once the model has been painted. Spray the covering with an airbrush over primer; suggest the wood and the fabric with shades and a fine wash. Settle the decals on gloss varnish.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of First World War aircraft in 1:48 scale.
  • For modelers with experience of biplanes and rigging.
  • For anyone interested in early fighters with a pusher propeller.
  • Not ideal as a first biplane: it calls for patience.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories beyond the contents of the box are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

Rather not. The strut-braced structure and the rigging between the wings and the tail booms call for patience and experience with building biplanes.

The imitation of the steel bracing wires between the wings and the booms. It is made from stretched thread or a special filament once the model has been painted.
