Anti-glare panels for the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A in 1:48 scale from AML - a small accessory that turns a model into a night fighter of the Wilde Sau units. Target kits: Eduard and Hasegawa.
Responsibility details are not available.
An inconspicuous but very effective accessory from AML for the night forms of the famous Focke-Wulf in 1:48 scale. The shields mounted along the exhausts kept the flames from the engine from dazzling the pilot, and on a model they immediately give away a machine of the night units. The set extends an Fw 190 A kit and is not a model in its own right. The set is meant for the Eduard and Hasegawa kits.
In the summer of 1943 the Luftwaffe began sending single-seat fighters up against British night raids as well. The pilots found the bombers visually over the burning cities, in the glare of searchlights and flares - the tactic was given the name Wilde Sau, wild sow. So that flashes from their own engine would not spoil the pilot's view, Fw 190 A machines were given anti-glare covers along the sides of the fuselage. It is exactly this detail that reliably tells a night fighter from an ordinary day fighter.
Seat the shields according to a photograph of the particular aircraft, because the fit varied from machine to machine. Keep the glued joint as thin as possible and paint them together with the fuselage so that the part blends with the camouflage. In 1:48 a shield comes out as a tiny strip, so free it with a cut led in from the edge and hold it with tweezers. Then run the smoke staining behind the exhausts rearward along the fuselage, never at right angles to its axis. Night machines with this equipment usually carried darkened undersides - check the particular scheme.
