1:48 B5N Kate Nat. Ins. w/ o white outline is a set of Dead Design masks for national insignia without a white border for the Nakajima B5N carrier-borne torpedo bomber in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The masking set covers the rendition of the national insignia in which the red disc has no light ring around it. On the large wing of the Kate this is the variant that looks most faithful on machines of the first period of the fighting in the Pacific.
The Kate was a carrier-borne torpedo bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy and in its day it was among the most modern machines of its category: all-metal construction, retractable landing gear and folding wingtips for the hangars of aircraft carriers. The crew consisted of three men under long glazing stretching almost halfway down the fuselage. The machine could carry a torpedo under the fuselage or a bomb load and it became famous for hits against American aircraft carriers in 1942.
In 1:48 scale the wing of the Kate is extensive and the insignia on it works out fairly large, so every unevenness of the base will show. Smooth the area thoroughly before masking, therefore. Because of the folding wingtips it is worth thinking through whether you are building the model with the wing folded or spread, and masking only accordingly. Apply the red over a light intermediate coat in two or three misted passes; a large area tempts you to spray it all at once, yet that is exactly how a pronounced step forms at the edge of the mask.
