A wheel set from Eduard for the four-engine Flying Fortress in 1:48. The title specifies the tread pattern in the shape of diamonds, one of the forms of tire the Fortresses flew with. On a model of this size the main wheels are a prominent feature and the first thing the eye falls on.
In 1943 the Boeing B-17F carried the main burden of the daylight bombing offensive of the Eighth Air Force over Europe, including the bloody raids on Schweinfurt and Regensburg. Tires for the heavy bombers were supplied by several American makers at the same time, so machines with different tread patterns stood side by side on the hardstands; when building a particular aircraft it is therefore worth comparing photographs and choosing the matching pattern.
Heavy bombers call for the look of loaded tires, and a slight flattening at the contact patch can be suggested with abrasive paper on a sheet of glass. After the base coat, bring the tread out with a thinned dark filter and lighten the raised edges instead. The diamonds stand out if, after the main coat, you go over the tread with a lighter shade applied with an almost dry brush. On the Fortress the main wheels retracted only partly and stayed visible in the engine nacelles, which is worth allowing for even on a model with the gear up. Glue the wheels to the landing gear as one of the last steps.
