A resin accessory set for builders of the Flying Fortress in 1:48 scale. It covers the exterior, that is the parts which are visible on a finished model from the outside and which tend to come out simplified or too thick in injection-molded plastic for production reasons. They are replaced by more accurate castings that hold scale thickness and sharpness of shape better. The set does not replace the base kit.
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber powered by radial Wright Cyclone engines. The B-17F and B-17G versions formed the core of the American units flying over Europe; the most striking difference is the chin turret under the nose, which only the G version received, and the staggered waist windows. The airframe was all metal and covered in small external features - fairings, vents, antennas, steps, turbocharger exhausts on the underside of the engine nacelles. On a large model these are precisely the small things that make the difference between a smooth shell and a convincing aircraft.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent because of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a saw and sand the surface carefully - do not breathe in the resin dust, sand wet and ventilate. Sand the original plastic details smooth and dry fit the new parts, and only then glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting; it unifies the resin surface with the plastic and reveals any scratches left from sanding. For a natural metal finish a gloss black base pays off, with the metallic shades sprayed through an airbrush, while a thin wash into the panel lines helps on camouflaged machines.
This is an accessory set, not a model of an airplane. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
