Replacement wheels for a model of the Beaufighter Mk.VI night fighter in 1:48 scale. A casting with a drawn-out tread and with a seat from standing. Intended for Revell kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
Bristol built the Beaufighter as a heavy twin-engined fighter derived from a torpedo bomber, and in the Mk.VI version it became the most numerous night hunter of the Royal Air Force. Hercules radial engines gave it the power it needed, a centimetric radar sat in the nose and four cannon under the floor could break an opponent apart with a single burst. Some of the machines went to RAF Coastal Command, where they carried a torpedo and attacked shipping along the European coasts. The accessory is intended for Revell kits.
Of all the small items on a finished model it is wheels that take the least compromise. An injection-molded part arises from two halves, so it has a parting seam right across the tread, and relieving it by sanding means sanding the pattern away too. A cast part is of one piece, the tread stays on it around the whole circumference, and the imprint of the load on the underside gives a model on a base a real weight. At the same time this is a modification where it is enough to get the dimension right and the job is done.
The wheel is cut off the casting residue, the cut face is leveled and the surface is degreased before gluing and before painting. The axle tends to be prepared for the pin of the original landing gear, though sometimes the hole has to be widened with a drill. The wheel can at the same time be turned slightly so that the imprint of the load seats square to the ground. And one thing that gets forgotten: if you build the model in the flying position with the landing gear retracted, the benefit disappears entirely. This accessory makes sense for a machine on the ground, not for one hung on a wire in a display case.
