About product

Radar warning receiver antenna fairing for the British Phantom FG.1 and FGR.2, 1:48 scale

This product is not a kit, but a small resin accessory from Quickboost. It deals with a characteristic shape feature of British Phantoms - the fairing of the receiver antenna that warned the crew of radar illumination. It is exactly this detail that distinguishes British machines from American ones at first glance, and in injection molding it tends to be simplified or made of two halves with a seam down the middle. The resin casting is in one piece, so there is no seam to sand away in an exposed place.

The real subject

The British Phantoms came about as a separate branch of the program: the FG.1 served with the Fleet Air Arm and the FGR.2 with the Royal Air Force, and both versions had a different powerplant from the American machines together with a number of airframe and equipment changes. The differences showed in the antenna fit as well - the British aircraft carried their own set of antennas and fairings, whose shape moreover changed during service as the equipment was modernized. For a model this means that it is worth comparing the shape of the fairing with a photograph of the particular machine and period you want to build.

Fitting and painting tips

Because the part is small it pays to work over a tray with a raised edge - little resin pieces have a talent for disappearing into the carpet. Cut the casting block off with a saw, sand the remainder with fine paper and check the surface against the light to see whether it is flat. Wash the mold release agent off the casting and let it dry thoroughly. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; the gel version gives a few extra seconds to adjust the position, which on a small part is more useful than speed. Apply the paint only once it is in place, so that the shade and the clear coat run smoothly into the surrounding panel.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the British versions of the Phantom in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who want to get rid of the seam on a visible antenna fairing.
  • Those interested in telling British machines faithfully apart from American ones.
  • Those who dare to handle a small resin part.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package. It is not a standalone model - it calls for a corresponding kit in 1:48 scale.

FAQ

It is made to match the British FG.1 and FGR.2 machines. The American versions had a different antenna fit, so its shape does not suit them.

It is a small single fairing, not an extensive set.

A fine-toothed saw to separate the casting block, abrasive paper and cyanoacrylate glue are enough. Tweezers make working with a small part considerably easier.
