A Dead Design set for spraying the glazing frames of the Japanese carrier-borne reconnaissance aircraft Nakajima C6N1 Saiun in 1:48 scale. The word opened in the name specifies the rendition for a model built with the canopy slid back.
The Saiun, designated Myrt by the Allies, was created as a fast carrier reconnaissance machine that was to evade an opponent by speed rather than by gunfire. The three-seat cockpit stretches across a large part of the slim fuselage, a powerful radial engine provided the power and the machine was among the fastest Japanese aircraft of the end of the war. Aircraft of this type flew long-range reconnaissance missions right up to the last days of the fighting.
The glazing of the Saiun is long and divided into a row of narrow panes with thin bars. In the open position the slid-back sections partly overlap one another and part of the frame is visible from above as well as from the side. Cutting tape by hand to such a fine grid takes a great deal of time and still leaves lines of uneven width.
Rid the glazing of fingerprints and grease, seat the mask and press it down along the whole length of every bar. Apply the paint in two or three passes so that it does not creep under, and let it set between coats. Lift the mask with a pull along the edge of the frame, not at right angles away from the surface of the glass.
