About product

Three-dimensional interior decal 1:48 CF-104 Late (Quinta Studio)

It is an accessory set, not a kit of the aircraft. Quinta Studio prints the interior elements three-dimensionally and straight away in color onto decal paper, so the instrument panel, the side consoles, the control panels and the seat belts gain depth and legible lettering all at once. The cockpit of the Starfighter is narrow and deep; tiny dials are hard to paint in it by hand, but with the canopy open it is clearly visible.

The real subject

The CF-104 is the Canadian form of the supersonic Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, produced under license by Canadair. The Royal Canadian Air Force operated it above all in the strike and reconnaissance roles with its units in Europe, that is differently from the original American fighter version. The type is recognizable at first glance by its very short wing with sharp leading edges and its high-set tailplane. The Late designation in the name of the set aims at the later service form, whose cockpit equipment differs from the early machines; Quinta therefore makes the early and late forms as two separate sets.

Application tips

Quinta three-dimensional decals are printed on a decal carrier paper: an element is soaked briefly in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the paper. It has no adhesive layer of its own and holds on gloss varnish, so spray the cockpit first, let the paint cure and cover the surface with gloss varnish; a matte surface underneath is a mistake. A decal softener and a setting solution do not belong here at all, as their chemistry would attack the printed resin. You will find the exact procedure in the instructions enclosed with the set. Take the elements up with tweezers with smooth jaws, seat them dry and only then press them home. Given the depth and the narrow shape of the cockpit, check in advance which parts you have to fit before gluing the fuselage, as after that you will no longer reach them.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Starfighter in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want a faithful cockpit without painting tiny instruments
  • Those who build a model with the cockpit canopy open
  • An alternative to photo-etched interior sets

It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory set. The basic model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory set of three-dimensional interior decals; a Starfighter kit in 1:48 scale has to be bought separately.

Quinta makes two separate sets for the early and late forms, because the cockpit equipment changed during service. Choose the one that matches the machine you are building.

Yes. The sheet is soaked briefly in lukewarm water and an element is slid off the carrier paper onto gloss varnish, which holds it. A decal softener and a setting solution do not belong here at all, as they would attack the printed resin. You will find the exact procedure in the instructions in the package.
