A set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive painting masks from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the American Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion heavy helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor a model: it is an accessory that makes it easier to paint the canopy glazing and other areas cleanly. The masks are stuck straight onto the parts, so the frames of the cockpit windows and the side ports come out with crisp straight edges without the laborious cutting of masking tape. Sets of this kind usually also include circular masks for the wheel rims, which make it easier to separate the tire from the rim.
The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion is an American heavy transport helicopter used above all by the Marine Corps and the Navy. A third engine and a seven-blade main rotor set it apart from the older versions and make it one of the most powerful Western-built helicopters, able to carry bulky loads including as a sling load. The large, segmented canopy glazing gives masks a rewarding job to do.
Lift the mask carefully off the backing with tweezers or the tip of a knife and lay it on a dry, degreased surface. Press the edges down thoroughly so that paint cannot creep under them. Apply the paint in thin coats, ideally with an airbrush, and pull the mask off before the coat has hardened completely. On strongly curved shapes it helps to seal the edge with masking fluid.
