A decal set in 1:48 scale with twelve options for the Grumman F-14A Tomcat from the mid-1970s to 1992, including nose art from Operation Desert Storm.
Responsibility details are not available.
The twelve options on this sheet follow one carrier-based fighter squadron of the US Navy from 1976 all the way to 1992. All the machines carry the code NH on their vertical tails, which belonged to Carrier Air Wing 11, and modexes in the range from one hundred to one hundred and ten. The sheet thus offers a continuous series in which it is possible to see how the finish of the same type changed over sixteen years.
The oldest pair comes from 1976 and from the deck of USS Kittyhawk, when Tomcats still wore a light gray underside, white surfaces and saturated squadron colors. The middle group served between 1984 and 1988 on USS Enterprise. The last five belong to USS Abraham Lincoln in the years 1990 to 1992, that is to the era of the low-contrast gray finish, when all that was left of the national insignia were dark gray outlines.
Fuselage number 159852 deserves attention. It appears on the sheet twice: first in 1976 on Kittyhawk, then in 1984 on Enterprise, each time in a different finish. Besides that, the sheet carries the nose art of machine 161609 from 1991, named Vark of Arabia after the squadron nickname and after the deployment over the Persian Gulf.
The decals are printed for 1:48 kits and a model of the F-14A version is assumed, that is the early variant with TF30 engines and square exhausts. Before application the model needs a gloss coat, otherwise air is trapped under the carrier film and the decal goes matte. The paints for the finish and the kit itself are not included in the package.
