About product

Avro Lancaster B Mk.I/III Dambuster / Grand Slam Bomber (1:48, Tamiya)

A large injection-molded plastic kit of the British heavy bomber Avro Lancaster in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya. The package allows the aircraft to be built in two celebrated guises: as the B Mk.III Dambuster modified for the attack on the dams, or as the B Mk.I Grand Slam Bomber carrying the giant penetration bomb. The model has a well-worked interior for both the cockpit and the bomb bay, movable front and rear turrets and two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines with removable cowlings that can be shown even after the build is finished. Figures of the crew and of ground personnel are enclosed as well.

The real subject

The Lancaster was the backbone of the night bombing effort of the Royal Air Force. It was powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engines. The Dambuster variant belonged to No. 617 Squadron and became famous for the attack on the Ruhr dams in 1943 with a spinning bouncing bomb, which reached the dam wall by skipping across the water. The Grand Slam Bomber, by contrast, carried a ten-ton earthquake bomb, the largest conventional load of the war; because of its weight, the bomb bay doors and the mid-upper turret were removed.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic and sand the joints of the large fuselage and wing surfaces carefully. Finish and paint the interior and the engines before closing up the fuselage and the nacelles. Use an airbrush for an even night undersurface and for the brown-and-green camouflage on top; settle the decals on a gloss clear coat and then flatten them. Pick out the panel lines with a wash.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Second World War aircraft who want a large showpiece for a display case.
  • For modelers with experience of building multi-engine aircraft.
  • For fans of the Royal Air Force and of the famous operations against the dams.
  • For lovers of detail who will appreciate the exposed engines and the fitted-out interior.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Either the Dambuster B Mk.III modified for the attack on the dams with a bouncing bomb, or the B Mk.I Grand Slam Bomber carrying the ten-ton earthquake bomb.

Yes. The model holds two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines with removable cowlings, so they can be shown on the finished aircraft as well.

Rather for modelers with some experience. It is a large multi-engine bomber with a rich interior and a number of subassemblies; it calls for patience and careful gluing.
