About product

de Havilland Vampire F.3 in 1:48 scale (Airfix)

An injection-molded plastic kit of a first-generation British jet fighter in 1:48 scale from the British brand Airfix. The model captures the characteristic twin-boom layout with a short fuselage nacelle and a single jet engine. The number of parts, the number of decal options and any additional parts are given on the packaging and in the instructions for the kit. The 1:48 scale gives plenty of room for the cockpit and the landing gear, while the finished model does not take up much space on a shelf, because the real aircraft was fairly small.

The real subject

The Vampire was one of the first British jet fighters to reach front-line service. It was powered by a single centrifugal-flow turbojet housed in a short fuselage nacelle, and the exhaust ran out between the two booms that carried the tail surfaces. The F.3 version appeared as a variant with a revised fuel capacity and the ability to carry drop tanks, which noticeably extended its range compared with the first batches. Aircraft of this type served with a number of air forces and are associated with the early era of jet flying.

Building and painting tips

On aircraft with a short nacelle the cockpit and the forward fuselage often need nose weight so that the finished model does not sit on its tail: dry-fit the assembly and add ballast if necessary before you close the fuselage. Glue with thin plastic cement with a capillary action, sand the seams once dry and re-scribe any engraving that has been damaged. Apply a primer before painting, which will also reveal any remaining surface faults. Early jets tend to be painted in smooth shades or in a metal finish, where the quality of the base is absolutely crucial. Under the decals use a gloss coat compatible with the paint you have used, and once finished level it off with a matte or satin coat.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the early era of jet aviation in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who will appreciate the unconventional twin-boom layout
  • Collectors of British aircraft of the postwar period
  • Intermediate modelers with experience of injection-molded kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an injection-molded plastic kit that has to be assembled and painted. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

The number of decal options is given on the packaging of the kit and in the instructions. Go through the contents of the box after unpacking.

It was a variant with a revised fuel system and the ability to carry drop tanks, which increased its range. Later versions had further design changes.

On aircraft with a short fuselage nacelle and a nose wheel it tends to be advisable. Dry-fit the assembly and add any ballast before you close the fuselage.
