A set of templates for a 1:48 model of the British twin-engine de Havilland Hornet fighter. The stated contents are two glazing masks, separately for the view from outside and from inside, and two national insignia masks. The film is cut to the framing of the kit by Trumpeter and the paint is applied straight over it.
Responsibility details are not available.
The de Havilland Hornet came about as a private initiative by the firm, which wanted to show what a pair of Merlin engines could do on the smallest and cleanest airframe possible. The designers used the proven combination of wood and metal, slimmed the engine nacelles down to the limit of what was feasible and fitted propellers turning in opposite directions so that the machine would have no tendency to swing on takeoff. The result was an aircraft that in level flight outdid anything ever given piston power, while keeping the agility of a single-engine fighter. It did not make it into the fighting of the Second World War, but in its naval version it served from the decks of aircraft carriers and its land-based variants flew over the Malay Peninsula as late as the middle of the 1950s.
The most irritating trouble comes right at the end of the build. Once the template is removed, a milky film of adhesive stays on the glass, and because the clear part is already fitted, it cannot be polished out. The residue can be taken off with a cotton bud moistened with isopropyl alcohol, but never with thinner, which frosts the glass for good. It is more effective to prevent it: do not leave the film on the part longer than necessary, and certainly not overnight in a warm place, because it is warmth that softens the adhesive and drives it into the surface.
