Photo-etched seat belts for a model of the Douglas TBD-1 aircraft in 1:48 scale, in the STEEL version, that is in steel.

A set of photo-etched seat belts for the seats of a model of the Douglas TBD-1 carrier torpedo aircraft, nicknamed the Devastator, in 1:48 scale. The STEEL designation in the name gives the material: the belts are etched from steel. Steel photo-etch holds its shape after bending better than softer metals, so a belt drapes naturally over the seat and the backrest and shows no tendency to straighten out again.
Seats in plastic kits tend to have the belts suggested only as relief, or missing altogether. Yet they are the first thing anyone notices in an open cockpit. A thin metal belt to scale looks like fabric, can be draped over the edge of the seat and gives the interior depth at once.
Separate the belt with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the burr. Shape it step by step with a round tool over a soft surface so that a natural sag appears. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied in a vanishing amount, best with a pin. If you are going to paint the belts, degrease the metal first and give it a primer.
For anyone building a model with an open cockpit who does not want an empty space in the seat. Belts are among the simplest ways to move a model visibly forward, and even a modeler who has not worked with photo-etch yet can manage to fit them. Glue them in before the fuselage is closed, because later you will not reach the seat. The kit for the model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
