About product

Dragon's teeth, antitank obstacles 1:48

A diorama accessory from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle but an element of terrain: a row of concrete pyramids known as dragon's teeth. It is used for finishing off the scene around the main model, for a display case and for a base of its own.

The real subject

Dragon's teeth are fixed concrete obstacles of pyramidal shape, sunk into the ground in several rows one behind the other. Their task was to prevent tracked and wheeled equipment from passing through and to steer it into places covered by fire. They were built as part of fortified lines and obstacle systems, often completed by ditches and minefields. The concrete blocks were cast on the spot, so they have a rough surface, visible marks of the formwork and irregular edges.

Setting it into the base

Teeth look convincing only when they do not stand on the surface but grow out of the terrain. Mark a line out on the base, set the accessory into a layer of modeling paste or putty and heap the soil around the foot so that it passes onto the concrete. The row should not be perfectly straight - slight departures in spacing and lean look realistic. Consider whether you want the scene as an intact obstacle or as one already overcome, with a block toppled and the soil churned up.

Painting and patina

Never paint concrete in a single gray. Make the base a medium gray with a hint of warmth, then apply a dark wash that runs into the structure and the marks of the formwork, and go over the edges by drybrushing in a lighter shade. Let the lower part be dirtied with pigment in the shade of the surrounding soil, so that the accessory blends in color with the base. Suggest moss and green algae only sparingly and only on the north, shaded side.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale
  • For scenes with terrain obstacles and fortifications
  • A rewarding object for practicing the painting of concrete
  • A modeler with basic experience will manage it

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Concrete obstacles of pyramidal shape sunk into the ground in rows. They prevented tracked and wheeled equipment from passing through and were part of fortified lines.

It is a diorama accessory, that is, an element of terrain. It holds no vehicle; it is built into the scene around the main model.

They must not stand on the surface. Set them into a layer of modeling paste or putty and heap the soil around the foot so that it passes onto the concrete.

Make the base a medium gray with a hint of warmth, add a dark wash into the structure and bring out the edges by drybrushing in a lighter shade. Dirty the bottom with pigment to match the surrounding soil.
