The real subject

The McDonnell F-101B Voodoo is the two-seat interceptor version of the American F-101. The crew consisted of a pilot and a radar operator seated one behind the other, and the machine served with the air defense units of the United States. It was a large and heavy twin-engine aircraft with nosewheel gear, so the wheels and their tires are among the clearly visible details on a model.

What the set contains

A set of replacement landing gear wheels for an F-101B model in 1:48 scale. The parts replace the wheels from the kit and are glued onto the original landing gear legs. The number of pieces, the form of the tread and whether the tires are shaped as loaded are stated by the manufacturer on the box.

Building and painting tips

The parts are not polystyrene and ordinary cement for plastic therefore has no effect on them; join them with cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest carefully, so that the contact surface stays flat and the wheel does not stand crooked. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent before painting and let them dry, otherwise the paint will hold poorly. Lay down a base coat, then spray the tire shade and paint the hub in with a brush. A tire is never deep black; a somewhat lighter gray tone looks more faithful on a model.

For modelers who want crisper wheel detail on a finished model than the kit offers. The swap is quick and it tells in the result, because the wheels on a displayed model are at eye level.
