F-35A SPACE, 1:48 decals from Eduard

This set of the SPACE line completes a model of the F-35A in 1:48 scale. The A version is the variant with conventional takeoff and landing from a runway, that is the basic land-based configuration of this single-engine multirole aircraft. Models of modern machines have a very clean surface and few rivets, so the detail moves into the cockpit and onto the placards. For that the SPACE line uses colored decals with a three-dimensional relief, which are lifted with tweezers off moistened backing paper.

Why relief decals

Relief printing has the structure raised on a thicker carrier, so once seated it casts a shadow of its own and does not look like a painted surface. The modeler thus gains a three-dimensional look without bending photo-etch and without gluing tiny parts. In return the carrier is less pliable, follows sharp edges less well and takes less chemistry than a conventional thin decal.

Application step by step

• The surface must be smooth, degreased and coated with gloss varnish that is fully cured.
• Trim the decal close and, with a sponge and a drop of detergent, moisten only the backing paper.
• Lift the element off with tweezers and blot up any excess moisture with the edge of a cloth.
• Do not use a decal softener; the manufacturer prohibits it on the SPACE line. Fix the element with white dispersion PVA glue.
• Once dry, go over the area with semi-flat varnish so that the outline of the carrier disappears.
