Art Scale 1:48: a single-sided masking set for an F-35B Lightning II model: masks cut to shape for the outer side of the cockpit glazing. The cut is based on the parts of the Tamiya kit.

A masking set from Art Scale in 1:48 scale for a model of the American F-35B Lightning II fighter. It is not a kit and not a spare part: these are masks cut to shape for the clear parts. The single-sided designation means that the set deals with the outer side of the glazing; anyone who wants clean framing when looking inside too will reach for the double-sided variant of the same set. For a model with the canopy closed the single-sided form is entirely enough. The cutouts match the parts of the Tamiya kit the set is used with; with another maker the shapes differ.
The F-35B is the version of the Lightning II intended for short takeoff and vertical landing. It differs from the other versions in its propulsion: behind the cockpit it has a vertically mounted lift fan driven off the main engine, and the nozzle of the main engine swivels downward, so the aircraft can hover in place and set down vertically. For that ability it pays with a smaller internal fuel load and a more complicated structure in the middle of the fuselage. The type is single-seat and single-engine, with internal weapons bays and shaping that suppresses its radar signature. It is used by the US Marine Corps and by European air arms operating machines from the decks of smaller ships. The cockpit has a one-piece hinged canopy with no transverse frame, so masking is simpler in shape here but all the more visible on a finished model.
Degrease the clear part and let it dry completely; keep your fingers off the visible face, because a print will show through the paint. Lift the mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it down and press it from the center toward the edges so that no bubble is left underneath. Run a toothpick along the edge: how tightly the edge beds down decides how sharp the transition will be. Spray thinly and in several coats; a heavy coat likes to tear away beyond the mask when it is peeled off. It works well to lay down the inner shade of the frame first and only then the outer covering color. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured.
